Geography

Geography

At St James', we aim to develop children's knowledge of the world and inspire a curiosity that grows throughout their school life. Through our BELONG Geography Curriculum, which is supported by Opening Worlds resources, pupils develop a deep understanding of people, places and environments while exploring how the Earth works and how human and physical processes shape our world.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to build knowledge progressively, from children's understanding of their local area to the wider world. Pupils study diverse places and communities, making meaningful connections between physical and human geography while developing key geographical skills, including map work, data interpretation and fieldwork. Regular retrieval practice ensures that knowledge is remembered and built upon over time.

We encourage pupils to ask questions, think critically and develop an appreciation of the world's diversity. Fieldwork, educational visits and residential experiences provide valuable opportunities to apply geographical knowledge in real-life contexts, deepening understanding and fostering a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
