Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Throughout the academic year the children will be completing a range of exciting topics. In English the children will immerse themselves into a book, then analyse key features of the genres they will be writing about finally they will complete a final piece of fabulous writing about what they have learnt. We follow White Rose in maths but adapt it to the needs of our children, the children enjoy the challenges they meet in every lesson. On Friday’s the children work independently to complete times table and arithmetic challenges, each week attempting to improve their scores. By the end of Year 2 it is expected that children can fluently recall the 2, 10, 5 and 4 times-tables.  In history we start in 1912 looking at The Titanic, we then go on a journey through time looking at all the different Kings, Queens, and leaders before finally focusing on a historically figure from a different country, Nelson Mandela. In year 2 we encourage the children to become Geographers. We study different elements of Geography starting with the exploration of the Seven Wonders of the world. In spring we look carefully at how food is transported across the country and across the world, before finally looking carefully at the continent of Africa.

Children will put their DT skills into action when they design and make moving vehicles, they will use new stitching techniques that they learn to produce a piece of celebratory bunting and finally in the summer children will be producing a healthy salad hopefully using some of our own fruit and vegetables grown in school. In music the children learn new skills in singing, composing, and playing a range of musical instruments

In year 2 your child will study the life a work of a range of different artists including Picasso, LS Lowry and finally Andy Goldsworthy. As we study each artist, we will attempt to recreate pieces of their work using different vehicles of art.

In PE the children work hard to develop their ability to work individually, in pairs and in teams, across a range of different sporting fields including gymnastics, dance, athletics and games.

Christian ethos is at the heart of our school, the children learn about different religions and go to visit different places of worship in the summer term.
