Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

In Year 2 we will be focusing on handwriting, reading and spelling this year with a lot of emphasis on phonics and the RWI programme. We will be embedding our reading, handwriting and spelling across our other curriculum areas in the afternoon. During our time in Year 2 Mathematics will develop through our new scheme Maths No Problem, this will allow the children to become really familiar with numbers. A key focus for year 2 is the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, all multiplication tables that the children must be secure with before they move into Year 3. During the afternoons we will be looking at the history topics: The Titanic, Kings, Queens and Leaders and The Stoneage. In Geography we look at: The seven Wonders of the World, Where does our food come from and “What is it like to live in Kenya.” During Autumn 1 we are mark making using different mediums in art, this progresses to us using paints to colour mix and to use clay to create ceramic tiles. In DT we will be looking at healthy foods and introducing the children to basic food preparation skills, we also create 3D Ferris wheel models using recyclable materials. In Science we look at many different units with a particular focus on humans, the life cycle and habitats. These units are great opportunities for Year 2 to explore the outside area. In music we are following the Charanga scheme, a scheme that really encourages the children to engage vocally and through the use of a variety of different musical instruments.
