Science
At St James', our science curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, develop a sense of wonder and encourage pupils to ask questions about the world around them. Through our BELONG Curriculum and Developing Experts, pupils build a secure understanding of scientific knowledge and develop the skills needed to investigate, explain and make sense of the world around them.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils' knowledge and understanding develop progressively from the foundational knowledge established in the early years through to the end of Key Stage 2. Pupils explore the key areas of biology, chemistry and physics, making connections between new and previously learned concepts. Alongside substantive scientific knowledge, pupils develop their working scientifically skills, including observing, questioning, predicting, investigating, recording and interpreting results.
We place a strong emphasis on practical experiences and scientific enquiry. Pupils are encouraged to explore ideas, use evidence to explain their thinking and develop scientific vocabulary with increasing precision. Through Developing Experts, children encounter real-world applications of science and develop an understanding of how science influences our lives and the world around us. Our aim is to nurture curious, knowledgeable and confident young scientists who are excited to explore, question and discover.
