At St James', our art curriculum aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and a lifelong appreciation of art. Through our BELONG Curriculum, pupils develop their artistic knowledge and skills progressively, building on previous learning and becoming increasingly confident in expressing their ideas and creativity.

Our curriculum exposes pupils to a diverse range of artists, cultures, styles and artistic traditions, helping them to understand how art reflects and influences the world around us. Pupils explore the work of artists from a range of backgrounds and use these influences to inspire their own creative responses.

Across EYFS, KS1 and KS2, pupils develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing and mixed media, while learning how to use a range of materials, tools and techniques. They are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and refine their work. Pupils also learn to evaluate and discuss their own work and that of others, developing the vocabulary and confidence to express artistic ideas.

Through high-quality teaching, modelling and practical experiences, pupils develop both substantive knowledge of artists, art movements and cultural traditions, and disciplinary knowledge of artistic techniques and processes. Our art curriculum enables pupils to develop their creativity, self-expression, confidence and cultural awareness, while encouraging them to see themselves as artists and recognise the important role art plays in our world.
